Big and Old

Photos can’t show how impressive this tree is, I first saw it in 64 during a June camping trip to the park…
I am surprised that it survived over the years from strong storms with high winds…

Goose Island State park Big Tree


The “Big Tree” at Goose Island State Park was named the State Champion Coastal Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) in 1969, and is thought to be one of the largest in the nation.

The “Big Tree” numbers:

* Trunk Circumference: 35 feet 1 and 3/4 inches or 10.71 meters
* Average Trunk Diameter: 11 feet 2 and 1/4 inch or 3.41 meters
* Crown Spread: 89 feet or 27.1 meters
* Height: 44 feet or 13.4 meters
* Age: In excess of 1,000 years
